Tom Green, the comedian who brought us the hilarious, if not highly unusual) Freddy Got Fingered has his own LIVE internet TV channel. If you have QuickTime Pro, you can easily sync Tom's Show to your iPod or PSP with MoviesForMyPod.

1. Purchase QuickTime Pro.
2. Download and install Windows Media Components for Macintosh.
3. Download and install MoviesForMyPod.
4. Bring up one of Tom's shows. From the menu in the bottom right corner of the player, choose "Save as QuickTime Movie".
5. Convert the saved movie into MPEG-4 or iPod format using MoviesForMyPod.
6. The video will be watermarked (but still watchable) unless you also purchase Flip4Mac WMV Player Pro.

NOTE: It looks like the archived shows are already converted to MPEG-4 format. Just go into the archives and click "download show". These files should play on the iPod "as is", use MoviesForMyPod to format it for PSP.

Sony PSP 2.8 Firmware Video Compatibility

As noted in a previous post, MoviesForMyPod/PSP/Phone does not create files compatible with the Sony PSP 2.7 Firmware. I just flashed (upgraded) a 2.7 PSP to version 2.8 to test with the latest firmware. Indeed, both standard 4:3 and widescreen encoding 16:9 are now again working in 2.8. Use the 2.6-compatibility mode and place your files into a folder named /VIDEO on your PSP memory stick. It appears that the VIDEO folder technique no longer supports the .THM 'thumbnail' files which were used to create the little poster frames that show a preview of the video content. So there's no need to copy those files. Also, it is no longer necessary to use the bizarro M4V0001.MP4 style filenames. Use any descriptive filename you want.

This means our files are compatible with the following PSP firmware revisions:

1.5 through 2.6 Firmware - supports 4:3 (not widescreen) MPEG-4 video.
2.6 Firmware - supports 4:3 and 16:9 video.
~~2.7 Firmware - not supported.~~(Upgrade your PSP to 2.8)
2.8 Firmware - Supports both 4:3 and 16:9 MPEG-4 video

Therefore, if you want to produce a "Universal" iPod+PSP podcast, stick to 4:3 aspect ratio (not widescreen) and convert it using the 1.5 PSP compatibility mode. This will produce a file compatible with all video iPods, all the PSP firmware versions listed above, QuickTime 6.5 and higher, and usually VLC and other MPEG-4 players.

If anyone has a Creative Zen and wants to write in a compatibility report, please do so.

As of this time, Digigami recommends everyone upgrade to PSP 2.8 Firmware, unless you are running one of the bootloaders. Otherwise, 2.8 looks like Sony finally figured out that consumers don't want to have secret handshakes with their little devices - they just want to play their media files.

I enjoy Neil Young's music. I haven't checked out his new album quite yet. I haven't yet listened to all the Neil Young albums I have. Nevertheless, if you like Neil Young, you will also like "The Samples". Originally from Colorado, I believe they are HQ in Vermont now. They have a number of free MP3 downloads for iPod/PSP, including a new song, on their web site.

But there is plenty of great live concerts of "The Samples" on the Internet Archive.
Check out "Weight of the World" and "Buffalo Herds and Windmills" from their show at the Fox Theatre.

How Fast is MoviesForMyPod?

In the time that elapsed between version 0.993 and version 1.0 of MoviesForMyPod/PSP, I did a lot of thinking about conversion times and performance. I also was intrigued by the various complaints about the quality of Apple's MPEG-4 encoder posted on various message boards around the internet. By exploiting the multi-processing architecture of "Mac OS X" and making some configuration changes to the way we call Apple's MPEG-4 video encoder, I believe we have succeeded in both areas.

To test, I took 48 minutes of archived Apple Ads and compressed them on a Quad G5 machine. I used the Movie for Podcast preset, which I believe is the best choice for Macintosh users who plan to play movies on both their computer and their iPod.

The result: 48 minutes of QuickTime source footage (64 files) compressed to iPod-ready video in an amazing 4 minutes! That is approximately 10x real-time.

As it stands, I consider Apple's MPEG-4 AAC (audio) encoder to produce a better audio quality than the tools based on the open source solutions. So if the open source tools have an edge in picture quality, Apple's audio encoder has the edge in sound quality. So if we are to believe George Lucas "Sound is half the motion picture experience", then there is good reason to choose MoviesForMyPod over ffmpegX or iSquint.

New to me, but perhaps not to you, I discovered Heather Nova on the eve of the MoviesForMyPod/PSP/Phone 1.01 update. She has two music videos on her web site, easily converted for your iPod/PSP/Phone. These two videos are unique due to the fact that they are shot in 2.2:1 "Cinematic" aspect ratio (ultra-widescreen). And, you'll need the newest version of MoviesForMyPod/PSP/Phone to convert them into MPEG-4 for your iPod and/or PSP (I did!). In addition, our new version also can turn these clips into ringtones for your modern cellular phone. How cool is that!

She has a variety of music videos on the iTunes music store, including my favorite "London Rain", which is a cut from her Siren album. Update: I couldn't bear it, I just impulsed and got Siren from the iTunes music store.

Using the default 3GP settings (just click OK when the custom dialog pops up the first time), I got a movie which plays on both these popular US handsets. On a Mac, simply use the Bluetooth 'send file' feature to send the movie over to the device. Away it goes.

Avoid Sony PSP 2.7 Firmware Upgrade (For Now)

After reviewing the changes to PSP Video capabilities after the Sony PSP 2.7 firmware upgrade, currently my recommendation is to stay with version 2.6. If you've already flashed to version 2.7, then you have limited options for converting videos to PSP.

On the Mac, it would appear that ffmpegX is the survivor for 320x240 MPEG-4 SP encoding. Unfortunately, the audio encoding in ffmpegX is lackluster. Currently, the MPEG-4 SP streams produced by MoviesForMyPod/PSP play on Version 1.5 through 2.6 firmware, respectively. The PSP H.264 streams produced by ffmpegX are not compatible with 2.7 firmware.

On the PC, I haven't had a chance to run Nero yet, but the Sony-designed (PC/Windows only) $19.95 Media Manager software can convert most videos into "AVC" (H.264) format. It does not support MPEG-4 SP encoding at all. I also just discovered today that the Sony Media manager supports decrypting DVD's for converting music videos. This is a very interesting development.

The one (and only) good thing about the version 2.7 firmware upgrade is the support for MPEG-4 AAC audio encapsulated in the same file format used by iTunes. Yes folks, .m4a audio files can now be played on the PSP (which also plays MP3).

The most important support note regarding this release is: if you want widescreen on your PSP, make sure and keep your 2.6 firmware. If you're still running 1.5, my advice is to find the 2.6 firmware updater (update to 2.6), but DO NOT upgrade to 2.7 (yet). There is vast amounts of PSP/MPEG-4 content on the internet which is not compatible with the 2.7 firmware, including the .MP4 files produced by MoviesForMyPod/PSP/Phone.

iPod? No troubles there. This new version will allow you to fit even more music videos on your iPod than before.

What is Podcasting?

The word ”podcast” is a concatenation of the words iPod and broadcast. The underlying technology used for podcasts, called RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is capable of containing any type of media including audio, video, graphics, and more.

Podcasting is a way of publishing podcasts to the web, allowing people to subscribe to a podcast and receive new ”episodes” automatically through an RSS feed. Podcasting consists of publishing XML files which contain references to media (called “enclosures”) to a website. Podcast aggregators (often called “podcatchers”), then read these XML files and download all the linked enclosures.

Unlike terrestrial and Internet radio, podcasts are time-shifted, meaning that listeners have control over when and where they hear their favorite programming. And, the episodes are delivered automatically to a subscriber on iTunes so the latest updates are always readily available with no effort required by the listener.

Podcasts offer iTunes users and iPod owners the same freedom and level of control they are familiar with when listening to their own personal music collections.

Universal iPod/PSP Podcast Movies

I started noticing that most video Podcasters were issuing separate MPEG-4 movies for 5G iPods and PSPs. So, in the new release of our software we have a template which creates one movie which syncs/plays on both devices.

I gave it a thorough test before rolling it out. The first three MPEG-4 videos we issued through the LOBECANDY podcast feed on iTunes were created with MoviesForMyPod/PSP - and they automagically download & sync.

I believe the PSP thumbnail files can also be added to a Podcast feed as a secondary enclosure, flagged with "image/jpeg" as the mime type. After all, the PSP has a built-in web browser...

Convert Music Video DVDs to iPod/PSP

The new MoviesForMyPod/PSP can convert most music video DVD discs into iPod/PSP format.

Required tools:
1. DVD to Hard Disc transfer program.
2. QT MPEG-2 Playback - Mac OS X - allows QuickTime to read MPEG-2 (.m2v) files.
3. MegaPEG Pro HD Demo (Beta 3.2).
4. MoviesForMyPod/PSP 1.0.

Steps:
1. Transfer the DVD disc image to a folder on your hard drive using something like MTR.
2. Make sure that the QT MPEG-2 Playback - Mac OS X is installed.

3. With the QT MPEG-2 component installed, QuickTime can show you the contents of VOB files (DVD MPEG-2 movie files).
4. Find the VOB file containing the Music video you want to load on the iPod/DVD.
5. Use "MegaPEG Pro HD Demo (Beta)" to 'demux' the VOB file. Under File choose MPEG Tools/Demultiplex... and open the VOB file. Choose a destination folder for the demultiplexed .m2v and .aiff files.
6. Verify that QuickTime can play the .m2v file with .aiff audio by playing the .m2v movie in the Finder preview (see note below).
7. Use the .m2v file as the Source movie in MoviesForMyPod/PSP.

TECHNICAL NOTE: The .m2v file and the associated .AIFF audio track must both have the same 'base' file name (For example Music_Video.m2v + Music_Video.AIFF). When the files are named in this way, QuickTime will automagically use the AIFF file as the audio track for the .m2v file. After demux, it will look like this:

MoviesForMyPod/PSP 1.0 Release

It's very early Monday morning, and I'm going to call this one a wrap. 1.0 that is.

Today we add PSP video conversion to MoviesForMyPod, a post-fix moniker, and a bunch of other enhancements to this, our popular free utility for Macintosh fans.

I found and fixed one last minute bug after Midnight, so if you downloaded the software between 9pm (Sun) and 4am (Mon) PST, you probably have the version with the bug. The executable file should be dated April 17, 2006. If not, download again.

For a final test, I converted this clip using the iPod+PSP Template, and then sync'd it to a 5G Video iPod and a Sony PSP v2 firmware. It played on both perfectly. Good luck with your own videos...

Convert RiHanna's SOS to an AAC ringtone, for free (requires Macintosh computer):

1. Download MoviesForMyPod/PSP/Phone.
2. Head on over to Rogue Amoeba and download the free version of Audio Hijack.
3. Familiarize yourself with Audio Hijack. It's very easy to use. Basically, it will capture any audio from Safari etc. to an AIFF (audio) file on your desktop.
4. Capture a Safari session and head over to imf.com.
5. Use Audio Hijack to capture the sound from RiHanna SOS video and save it as an AIFF on your desktop.
6. Open the AIFF file with MoviesForMyPod/PSP/Phone and choose "Phone Audio: AAC Ringtone Small File".
7. Convert the File to RiHannaSOS.aac. Use the Bluetooth utility to "Send File..." and send the RiHannaSOS.aac to your Bluetooth phone.
8. Receive the RiHannaSOS.aac. Depending on what phone model you have, it may ask you if you want to apply the file as a Ringtone. Otherwise, save the file to your audio location on the phone.
9. Finally, modify your phone "Profile". Once the RiHannaSOS.aac is saved in the audio folder on your phone, you should be able to select it as a ringtone.

This version of the RiHanna SOS video is ot only a music video, but also a hip-hop dance lesson. Very cool. Unfortunately, not for your iPod. If you want it for your iPod, and you have a Mac, you can use the utility "SnapZ Pro" to grab anything on your screen, including this Flash video.
As far as the audio goes, WireTap should be able to take care of that. If you try it and have a report, post a comment...

Also, if you are looking for the official video, it is not yet released, but you can pre-order the SOS CD-Single [enhanced] including video. Unless this is an oddball disc, the video will be in QuickTime format and can be easily converted for your Video iPod using MoviesForMyPod (UPDATE: I just ordered this disc as it is available through some of Amazon.com's partners - will keep you informed).

iPod Repairs

Awhile back, a 1G (original) iPod I was using developed a crackling/intermittent audio problem in the headphone socket. In the beginning, it simply crackled. Eventually the sound in one of the ears disappeared altogether. I sent it to ipodresq.com, and they made it work 'as good as new'. Highly recommended.

When I first released MoviesForMyPod, I picked the name MovieToGo because I did a google search on the term and it came up with only 3 pages. Unfortunately, Google's wordstemming algorithm did not break down the word cluster in order to find this ipod sync for movie showtimes program. Later, when I found out about it, I immediately changed the name of our software. So here's a hello to the REAL MovieToGo, which looks like a cool program.

Best Earbuds for your iPod

I've personally auditioned (and when I say auditioned, I mean actually used each model for at least a week with my own music listening) a wide range of earbuds including models that cost $300-$500. I have a fairly good background in pro-audio/music engineering, so I'm pretty picky when it comes to good sounding audio.

Personally, the standard iPod earbuds don't do it for me. Curiously, the iPod D/A converters which drive the earbuds are actually very high fidelity, so your iPod will sound much better if you would pair it with some good earbuds. In fact, the iPod D/A puts to shame the PowerBook G4 headphone output quality.

My personal choice are these SONY earbuds ($26 US). SONY is demonstrating their clear superiority in audio products here, and even the earbuds that cost $20 US are superb. If you want to make sure your iPod is visible to potential thieves, they come in white as well ($27 - 2004.04.29: I just ordered a pair). And, for those of you who like the ear-clip thingie, these ones are white also.

If you know someone is getting an iPod for christmas, and you want to put something significant into their stocking, get them these, and they will feel the love.

Highly recommended (I'm using them now).

Other earbuds I have tried in my quest for favorites:
Etymotic - found them prone to clogging with earwax and lacking bass response. High-frequency response is stunning, however.
Shure e2c - did not find the sound particularly good, and had a hard time getting them to stay in my ears.
Shure e3c - same basic complaints as Shure e2c.

Convert WindowsMedia (WMV) Files for $49

Widescreen 16:9 source content

Converting widescreen material for use on the iPod is fairly easy. The easiest method is to simply use the H.264 encoding preset, which applies widescreen automagically. If you want to use MPEG-4, choose custom, and convert with 320x180 as the target frame size. Then, make sure that the iPod Video Settings (/Video/Video Settings/Widescreen) is set to ON.

Your movies should then play in Widescreen (letterbox).

'No Sound' Issues

A popular question for technical support is 'my movie has no sound - help!'.

If your source movie file is an MPEG-1 file (.mpg file extension), first create a QuickTime movie using MPEGStreamClip (free), and then convert with MoviesForMyPod. Or, try using Podner ($10).

If your source movie file is a DivX AVI file, try running the file through DiVX Doctor before processing with MoviesForMyPod.

If your file is not one of these formats, please contact technical support.
